Preamble
The
Asian Mining Congress and Exhibition, a biennial event organized by the Mining,
Geological & Metallurgical Institute of India (MGMI) provides a forum for the
miners, planners and policy makers to discuss the various issues affecting the
mining industry in the Asian region in particular, and also in the rest of the
world. The event provides an unrivalled opportunity for the manufacturers of
mining machinery in the world to showcase their products and do business. The
first AMC and Exhibition was held in January, 2006 to commemorate the centenary
of MGMI and 2nd AMC was held in January 2008. Both these events were highly
successful with participation of large number of delegates from India and about
20 other countries. The 3rd Asian Mining Congress and Exhibition in this sequel
will be held on 22nd to 25th January 2010 in Kolkata.
Background
The current global recession has affected the industrial
countries more severely than the developing countries of Asia. The world steel
production has declined by about 1.2% in the year 2008 but the production in
most of the Asian countries led by China, India, South Korea and the Middle East
increased by 2 to 3%. In India the power sector continues to grow at a rapid
pace. Coal production in India has been increasing at a rate of more than 6% per
year to meet the increasing demand. Indonesia continues to be a major exporter
of coal in the world and with the recent grant of a huge iron-sand concession is
slated to become an important player in iron ore trading also. The global
economic downturn has resulted in weakening of commodity prices, slide in
profits of mining companies and a general slowdown in exploration and mine
construction activities. However, many mining experts believe that the current
recession is unlikely to continue for long and it is important for mining
companies to take proactive actions for a possible rebound. The mining industry
needs to pursue energy efficiency and cost cutting in mining operations. High
performance mining for increased efficiency, productivity and production
quantity is the need of the day. The most important factors affecting
productivity are infrastructure, Communication and Automation. The manufacturers
of mining machinery may utilize the slump period in forging new alliances
amongst themselves and invest in R&D activities to improve the equipment
efficiency.

beautiful coastline, which attracts tourists round the year. India has a
civilization which is more than 5000 years old. The glories of the past stand
side-by-side with wonderers of modern science and engineering. India has a great
and stirring past. There is indication that her future will be even greater.
Kolkata: The Host City
Kolkata is a vibrant modern
metropolis of 10 million plus population and is the Gateway to Eastern and
Northeastern States of India. The city is well connected by international and
